David Ben Gurion, then the head of the Yishuv and later the state’s legendary first Prime Minister, had declared the restoration of the Jewish independence, lost two thousand years earlier. It was established as a safe heaven for the Jewish people in the aftermath of the Shoah, promising freedom of religion for all faiths.
