A NEW RECORD OF NORTH AMERICAN TOURISM TO ISRAEL IN 1995: 500,000 TOURISTS

BY: GAD NAHSHON

Israel's Commissioner of Tourism in North America, Uzi Michaeli, announced recently, at the American Society of Travel Agents' World Congress in Philadelphia, that around 500,000 tourists from America and Canada have visited Israel in 1995. Michaeli attributed this unprecedented growth to the escalation of the peace process.

Michaeli also described the expansion of friendly ties in the Mideast and North Africa as well. In 1994, Israel, Jordan, Egypt, the Palestinian Autonomy, Morocco, Tunisia, Cyprus and Turkey created a new Middle East regional tourism association, namely MEMTTA in order to promote tourism and to develope better understanding among these nations.

It should be noted that almost 2 million tourists from all nations visited Israel in 1995, but, sad to say, most American Jews are lacking the Jewish- Israeli experience.
