Israel's Population to Approach Nine Million by 2020
In the year 2020, the population of Israel will be between 8.2-9 million people, according to figures released on Tuesday by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), HA'ARETZ reported. The CBS reports that 1 million of the 9 million will be over the age of 65, double the number of 1995, and population density will increase from 273 to 200 people per square kilometer.
The new population forecast is based on the last population and housing survey, which dates from 1995, and recent demographic trends in Israel. The population of Israel, which is currently 6.2 million, will reach 7 million in 2006 or 2007, and 8 million between 2013-18. According to the report, Israel will be one of the most crowded countries in the world by 2020, with 6.5 million Jews and 2.5 million Arabs.
