President Donald Trump has accepted Nikki Haley's resignation as US ambassador to the UN. Israel's UN Ambassador praises Haley as "true friend of Israel."
Many are speculating as to the reason for Ambassador Haley's resignation as Washington's UN envoy but there has been no official reason given for the dramatic move.
"Big announcement with my friend Ambassador Nikki Haley in the Oval Office at 10:30 am," the President tweeted earlier.
Haley discussed her plans with Trump already last week at the White House, the website Axios reported.
The announcement has especially shocked supporters of Israel. "Whatever Trump may have gotten wrong, his choice of Nikki Haley as ambassador to the UN was a masterstroke," the Boston Globe's Jeff Jacoby wrote recently.
CNN has referred to her as "the breakout star" of Trump's cabinet.
"Thank you, Nikki Haley! Thank you for standing with the truth without fear. Thank you for representing the values common to Israel and the United States," Israel's ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon said in response to the resignation.
"Thank you for your support for the State of Israel, which helped lead to a change in Israel's status in the UN. Thank you for your close friendship and common paths. Wherever you are, you will continue to be a true friend of Israel."
"I thank Ambassador Nikki Haley for leading an uncompromising struggle against the hypocrisy at the UN and on behalf of the truth and justice of our country. Best of luck!" Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated.
