Tourism Writers, Photographers and Filmmakers to Convene in Jerusalem in October 1998

The Society of American Travel Writers will hold its 43rd annual convention in Jerusalem from October 27 to November 2, 1998, it was announced today in New York, by Arie Sommer, Israel's Commission for Tourism in North America.

The society, known familiarly as "SATW", is the world's largest grouping of communicators in the field of tourism, and has a membership of some 1,100 U.S. and Canadian writers, editors, journalists, photographers, filmmakers, video producers and public relations professionals. Its annual conventions combine business meetings of the society, with in-depth exposure to a tourism destination.

Inevitably, in the wake of an SATW convention, vast quantities of articles and media coverage of the destination appear in "SATW last convened in Israel in 1983", said Sommer, adding that the 1983 Israel meeting had been the society's largest convention to date. "We are very excited to be hosting SATW again", Sommer continued, "particularly as the convention will be part of Israel's 50th Anniversary celebrations."

The convention will take place at Jerusalem's Hyatt Regency Hotel, and business meetings will be interspersed with touring. Delegates will also be able to select from a large variety of pre- and post-convention tours in Israel, as well as to Jordan, Egypt and Cyprus. Official airline for the 1998 SATW Convention will be El Al, Israel's national carrier. Some 425 members of SATW participated in the society's most recent convention, held from October 24 to 29 in Bangkok, Thailand.
